
Organization History
The Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital is a renowned medical institution with a rich history. It was established on January 2, 1912, at the request of His Majesty King Rama VI, who donated his wealth to purchase land and buildings for the hospital. The hospital was named "Vajira Payaban" due to its auspicious origins.
His Majesty the King appointed a steering committee led by Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, also known as Prince of Songkla Nakarin. He is regarded as the father of modern Thai medicine. The committee was responsible for establishing hospital regulations based on the royal initiative.

The division of Surgery was changed to “Department of Surgery.” As part of this change, the specialized surgery unit was divided into different divisions, each with a specialization. These new divisions included the General and Thoracic Surgery division, Orthopedic Surgery Division, Anesthesia Division, Urological Surgery Division, Plastic Surgery Division, Pediatric Surgery Division, Neurosurgery Division, Abdominal cavity Surgery Division, Eye-Ear-Nose-Throat Division, and Heart Surgery Division.

The Thai Medical Council has authorized the Department of Surgery to be a training institute for surgical resident doctors. In 1985, Vajira Hospital was officially designated as the clinical teaching base for the Faculty of Medicine Srinakharinwirot University. In 1988, the Department of Surgery jointly organized surgical teaching for fourth-year medical students of the Faculty of Medicine Srinakharinwirot University. Additionally, the Department of Surgery has also served as the Department of Surgery for the esteemed Faculty of Medicine at Srinakharinwirot University
Vajira Hospital has undergone a restructuring process. It now holds a status equivalent to that of a department. The Department of Surgery has been transformed into the Division of Surgery, which belongs to the Medical Services Technical Group. Specific surgical work has been diverted to other specializations such as orthopedic surgery, eye surgery, ear, nose, and throat surgery, and anesthesiology. Consequently, the remaining surgical work has been reorganized into units.
Year 1993
By the resolution of the Bangkok Civil Service Commission, we have received approval to establish the Bangkok Medical College. It is a government agency under the Bureau of Medicine, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and is an affiliated institution of Mahidol University. Later 1998, it was decided that the Bangkok Medical College would be combined with Vajira Hospital and use the name “Bangkok Medical College and Vajira Hospital.” As a result, the Surgery division was adjusted to the Department of Surgery.
Year 2010
The Faculty of Medicine at Vajira Hospital has become integral to Navamindradhiraj University, previously known as the University of Bangkok Metropolis. The establishment of Navamindradhiraj University is a tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne by the University of Bangkok Metropolis Act B.E. 2010, which was enacted on November 13, 2010. Navamindradhiraj University is a government-funded higher education institution under the supervision of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. It holds the status of a juristic person and is Thailand’s first local higher education institution.
On June 20, 2013, Navamindradhiraj University was officially named by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, making it the last university to receive such an honor. Professor Suraphol Nitikraipot, PhD is the President of the University Council, and Associate Professor Anan Manomaiphiboon, MD, has been serving as the president.
Since its inception, the Faculty of Medicine Vajira Hospital has been dedicated to becoming a valuable medical institution and a leader in urban medicine. Its primary focus is to produce doctors and medical personnel who can provide quality medical care to the Thai people, helping them achieve a better and sustainable quality of life.
